Hazard: Loose material on walkways and around machines at ground level
Common Controls: Regular house keeping

Hazard: Working at heights
Common Controls: Hand railed walkways

Minor maintenance:

Hazard: Nip Points
Common Controls: lockout / isolate

Hazard: Hot surfaces
Common Controls: gloves

Hazard: Falling rocks off Plant / or quarry face
Common Controls: avoid walking under conveyors

Hazard: Falling parts or tools off plant
Common Controls:

  • Check for loose material or items on plant before moving
  • Hardhat

Hazard:Unexpected machine movement during start up or during operation:
Common Controls:

  • keep clear
  • Expect the unexpected

Hazard: Moving rollers / conveyors
Common Controls:

  • guarding / lanyards
  • Shut down / isolate

  • UHF, prestart discussions
  • Keep a good look out

  • tramp metal – High risk

  • Machinery doors & windows shut
  • Cab & cab filters clean
  • Use water where possible to suppress dust
  • Respirators when required

REMINDER – REDUCE YOUR EXPOSURE TO SILICA DUST

Silica is a naturally occurring compound found in stone, rocks and gravel. Its most common form is quartz and most sand found on the planet is made up of silica. It is also in a lot of plastics and other man made products.

There is increasing awareness that silica dust can cause a range of health issues such as – Skin irritation, coughing, hay fever, Asthma, lung diseases, and Silicosis.

For your own safety keep your dust exposure to a minimum:

  • Always operate your excavator or loader with doors and windows shut. ( also truck / utes ).
  • Keep your cab clean. Wipe with damp cloth or vacuum out dust regularly.
  • Check cab air filters are kept clear.
  • Use water where possible to reduce dust from crushers/screeners.
  • If you need to work outside in dusty conditions wear a respirator or dampen down the area with water.
